Deep, Funky, Passionate, Extremely Musical , or if a sports term were to be used, the correct term would be “Swagger”. All of these words have been used to describe the work of Producer, Composer, Arranger, Songwriter and Singer Gil Small.
Brooklyn born and raised in Amityville, NY Gil has been bitten hard by the musical bug since birth. His parents have said “Since Gil was three, we noticed he had a deep interest in music. He would just rock to whatever was playing, when we would turn on our record player. We didn’t know what was going on up there in his head, but we knew something was going on”.
Classically trained on piano by his mother, by age 9 he gravitated to the French Horn as his principal instrument. By age 12 Gil developed a deep interest in Popular, R&B, and Soul Music .The music of Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones especially peaked Gil’s curiosity for creating music.
Following graduation from Berklee College of Music Gil began working in music production. Learning from Isley Brothers keyboardist Chris Jasper, as well as other artists, ranging from De La Soul to Lalah Hathaway. He served as a “ghost producer” on several well known projects over the next few years before forming GrooveCity Entertainment with his wife Robin Small.
Over the course of the current decade, Gil Small has played a major role in a number of “Underground Soul Gems”, providing both material and mentorship to a new generation of soul artists.
Gil has provided production services and songwriting/arranging services for Freddie Jackson, Jazz Singer Cossandra Wilson, R&B artist Usher, Jermaine Dupree, Vanessa Rubin, Ronny Jordan, Barbara Tucker, Angela Johnson, and Asaph Womack.His TV/Film credits are the Sci Fi channel “Roswell” as composer.
